CHAPTER THIRTY-SIX

Antelope Canyon, Page, Arizona, United States

“Where are we?” Rose asked, trying to catch her breath and quickly take in their new environment as the portal closed behind Elvis and Dolly, thankfully not allowing the Bounty Hunter the same passage. He would be coming though. That was guaranteed based on the instructions. But from where he would come to stop them—kill them—that would be an unwanted surprise.

“Antelope Canyon,” London replied, putting both of his hands on his head, looking around, studying the tight valley where the portal had dropped them. “It’s the second location on the instructions, so this is convenient.”

“I’m guessing by design,” Rose said, slipping the Whispering Orchid into her pocket, her heart beating so fast she thought it was going to echo through the canyon.

“I’m sorry, Love, but we couldn’t pick the flower,” Dolly said, floating over between Rose and Elvis, a shameful look on her face. “We could only find it.”

“That’s fine,” London said, smiling at her. “You helped and yes, I think we have to retrieve the objects on our own, but you can assist and be our eyes and ears. We need that now since I have no idea where the Echo Stone could be since we’re quite literally surrounded by rock.”

Rose nodded, feeling like this was a sick joke. They had to find a single flower in a haunted forest and now a stone in a chasm of rocks. But the flower had been in a specific place, so they just had to use the information that they knew about their location.

“The Light Beams in Upper Antelope Canyon,” Rose said in a hush, afraid that the Bounty Hunter was nearby, guessing he was after them.

“What?” London questioned, looking down at her.

“That, like the Clearing in the forest, is the most notable place here,” Rose explained, her heart continuing to beat faster than usual. “It’s where the beam of light shines through the narrow canyon top and is thought to hold spiritual significance. I bet that’s where the Echo Stone is.”

“Okay, well, then let’s go,” London said, taking off at once, believing in her hunch, the same way that she had in his. She was glad that he didn’t question her because she really felt that was the right answer at her core. Also, Rose knew that they didn’t have any time to waste—the Bounty Hunter would be trying to kill them soon.

Rose followed her husband, the chimeras beside them. Her footsteps ironically echoed softly as she navigated the winding passageways of Antelope Canyon. Its walls were a stunning array of rust-red and orange hues, carved by the hands of time and wind and the relentless flow of water.

Sunlight filtered through the narrow openings above, casting beams of light that danced on the sandy floor, creating a tranquil yet ethereal glow that lit the route ahead. The air was cool and still, carrying the scent of ancient stone and the slight, earthy aroma of desert sage, a harsh contrast to the dry landscape outside.

As Rose trekked deeper, the canyon’s natural sculptures grew more elaborate.
